Curriculum Intent
At The Drive Primary School, we aim to inspire curiosity, exploration and a lifelong love of learning through an engaging and inclusive Geography curriculum. We encourage children to ask questions about the world around them, investigate places and environments, and develop a deeper understanding of how people and communities are connected.
Throughout their journey at The Drive, we want children to think like geographers. Pupils learn to observe, question, collect information, analyse data and draw conclusions about the world, developing the skills needed to understand local, national and global issues.
Our Geography curriculum helps children develop a strong sense of place, beginning with their local area and expanding to the wider world. Through the study of diverse locations, cultures and environments, pupils build respect, empathy and appreciation for others, reflecting our values of being caring, tolerant, honest, hardworking and self-disciplined.
Geography also develops children's understanding of environmental responsibility and their role as global citizens. Through meaningful experiences and real-world learning, pupils build cultural capital and gain the knowledge and confidence to contribute positively to the world around them.
The subject promotes our RESPECT values, encouraging children to think hard, have a go, remain resilient, use their imagination, value others and enjoy learning.
Curriculum Implementation
At The Drive Primary School, Geography is taught through the Kapow Primary Geography Scheme, providing a clear progression of geographical knowledge and skills from Early Years to Key Stage 2. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build on prior knowledge and make meaningful connections between places, environments and key geographical concepts.
Our enquiry-led approach encourages pupils to think like geographers, investigating questions about the world through observation, discussion, fieldwork and data collection. Lessons focus on developing understanding through the key concepts of:
- Location and place
- Human and physical geography
- Fieldwork and enquiry
- Environmental awareness
Geography lessons are designed to promote curiosity, active participation and a love of learning. Children are encouraged to ask questions, investigate real-world issues and develop an understanding of the diverse environments and communities that make up our world.
A strong emphasis is placed on practical, hands-on learning. Children regularly explore the local area through fieldwork, using first-hand experiences to observe, measure, record and analyse geographical information. Regular retrieval opportunities enable pupils to recall and build upon previously taught knowledge and vocabulary, helping them make meaningful connections across their geographical learning. Educational visits and outdoor learning opportunities help bring learning to life whilst developing children's confidence, independence and understanding of their local and wider world.
Mathematical skills are embedded throughout the curriculum as pupils apply their learning through:
- Data collection and interpretation
- Map reading, including scale and coordinates
- Measuring and comparing distances
- Creating and analysing charts and graphs
