Nursery Curriculum

Curriculum

In Nursery, we believe children learn best through play. Our carefully planned activities encourage curiosity, imagination, and independence. Through hands-on experiences, children begin to develop essential early skills in communication, literacy, numeracy, and understanding the world around them.

We place a strong emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills. Through stories, songs, rhymes, and conversations, children learn to express themselves, share ideas, and build confidence in communicating with others.

Our environment offers plenty of opportunities for creativity. Whether painting, role-playing, building, or exploring music, children are encouraged to use their imagination and express themselves in a variety of ways.

We support children in building positive relationships, learning to share, take turns, and work together. Developing independence and self-confidence is central to everything we do.

Our caring staff work closely with families to ensure each child feels valued and supported. We celebrate individual strengths and help every child progress at their own pace.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The EYFS guides our practice through:

  • Seven areas of learning and development, including communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design
  • A focus on the prime areas (communication, physical development, and personal development) as the foundation for all learning
  • Ongoing observation and assessment to ensure each child is supported and challenged appropriately

The EYFS ensures that our curriculum is balanced, purposeful, and responsive to children’s interests and developmental needs.

Progress Check at Age 2

The Progress Check at Age 2 is a simple summary of your child’s development, usually completed by their nursery or early years setting when they are around two years old. It looks at how your child is growing in three key areas: communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development. The check highlights your child’s strengths and identifies anything they may need extra support with. It is shared with you so you can understand how your child is progressing and, if needed, it can help you access additional advice or support from professionals such as your health visitor.

Birth to 5 Matters

We use Birth to 5 Matters as a supporting document alongside the EYFS. It helps us to:

  • Understand typical patterns of development for children aged 0–5
  • Plan meaningful, age‑appropriate learning experiences
  • Recognise that children develop in different ways and at different rates
  • Assess children’s progress through observation rather than formal testing
  • Provide inclusive support for all children, including those who may need additional help

Rather than treating development as a checklist, Birth to 5 Matters supports a holistic and flexible approach, allowing practitioners to respond to each child’s unique learning journey.

By combining the EYFS framework with the guidance from Birth to 5 Matters, we provide a rich, nurturing curriculum that:

  • Builds confidence, independence, and resilience
  • Encourages communication and social interaction
  • Supports children in becoming active, curious learners

We work closely in partnership with families to ensure every child feels safe, valued, and ready to take the next steps in their education.
