Toilet Training

Toilet Training

We understand that every child develops at their own pace, and toilet training is an important milestone. In Nursery, we work closely with families to support children in becoming more independent and confident with toileting.

How we support your child:

  • We follow your child’s routine and use consistent language to avoid confusion.
  • Gentle reminders are given throughout the day to encourage children to use the toilet.
  • We praise and celebrate successes to build confidence and self-esteem.
  • Accidents are handled calmly and sensitively, reassuring children that this is a normal part of learning.
  • We encourage independence in dressing, handwashing, and hygiene.

We ask that parents provide spare clothes and keep us informed of any changes or progress at home so we can support your child effectively.

Toilet training works best when there is consistency between home and nursery. We encourage open communication so we can work together to support your child’s development.

If you would like additional support or guidance with toilet training, the following trusted sources can help:

  • Your Health Visitor or GP – for personalised advice and support
  • NHS Website – practical tips and guidance for parents
  • ERIC (The Children’s Bowel & Bladder Charity) – expert advice and resources for toilet training and continence (https://eric.org.uk/potty-training/)
  • Local Family Hubs or Children’s Centres – often run workshops or offer support sessions.

If you have any concerns or would like to discuss your child’s needs, please speak to a member of our nursery team—we are always happy to help.
