Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)

Reception Baseline Assessment

In Reception, we take time to get to know each child as an individual and understand the skills they bring with them when they start school. As part of this, children complete the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) within their first six weeks.

The assessment is carried out one-to-one with a familiar adult in a calm, supportive environment. It is designed to feel like part of everyday classroom interactions, using practical and engaging activities.

The RBA focusses on early development in:

  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics

There is no pass or fail, and children will not feel tested or under pressure. The information gathered simply helps to build a picture of each child’s starting point and supports us in planning their learning journey.

The results are used nationally to measure progress over time, rather than to assess individual children.

What this means for your child

  • A gentle, play-based experience
  • No preparation needed
  • Carried out by a familiar adult in a safe environment
  • Helps us get to know your child and support their learning

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child know they are being assessed?
No. The activities feel like games and everyday learning, so children remain relaxed and comfortable.

Do I need to prepare my child?
No preparation is needed at all. We encourage children to come in, settle in, and enjoy their first weeks at school.

Will I receive my child’s results?
The assessment is not reported as a score. However, teachers use the information to understand your child’s starting point and will discuss your child’s progress with you as part of their learning journey.

Does this affect my child’s future learning?
The RBA does not impact your child’s day-to-day learning or outcomes. It is used nationally to measure progress from Reception to Year 6.

Who carries out the assessment?
A known adult in school will complete the assessment with your child in a calm, familiar setting.
