Curriculum Intent
At The Drive Primary School, we aim to inspire curiosity and a love of learning through an engaging and inclusive Science curriculum. We encourage children to ask questions, explore the world around them and develop a deeper understanding of how things work.
We want our pupils to think like scientists. Through practical investigations and hands-on experiences, children learn to observe, predict, investigate, record results and draw conclusions using evidence.
Working Scientifically is at the heart of our curriculum. Children develop enquiry skills through:
- Observing over time
- Pattern seeking
- Identifying and classifying
- Comparative and fair testing
- Research using secondary sources
As pupils progress through school, they build knowledge in biology, chemistry and physics, developing confidence, resilience and independence. Science also helps children understand important issues such as health, sustainability and caring for the environment, preparing them to become responsible citizens of the future.
Curriculum Implementation
At The Drive Primary School, Science is taught through the STEM Learning Solutions Primary Science Curriculum, which provides clear progression in knowledge and skills from Early Years to Year 6.
Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build on what they already know and make links across different areas of science. Lessons are practical, enquiry-led and designed to develop curiosity and a love of discovery.
Children regularly take part in investigations where they:
- Ask and answer scientific questions
- Make predictions
- Carry out practical enquiries
- Gather and record results
- Analyse evidence and draw conclusions
- Use scientific vocabulary to explain their thinking
Regular retrieval activities help pupils remember and build on prior learning. Science is further enriched through outdoor learning, educational visits, visitors and STEM experiences that bring learning to life.
Mathematics and technology are used throughout science lessons as children:
- Measure accurately
- Collect and present data
- Create charts and graphs
- Identify patterns and trends
- Use digital tools to support investigations
Through enquiry, exploration and practical learning, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to understand and enjoy science.

Curriculum Impact
At The Drive, we want every child to be curious about the world around them and develop the confidence to think like a scientist.
Through practical, hands-on learning, pupils ask questions, solve problems and explore their own ideas. They develop a strong understanding of scientific concepts while learning how to observe, investigate, test and explain.
We encourage children to become independent learners by leading their own enquiries, thinking critically and using ambitious scientific vocabulary. Pupils learn to discuss their ideas clearly, use evidence to support their thinking and make links between science and everyday life.
