Information for Children, Parents and Carers

Welcome to Reception!

We are delighted to welcome you to our Reception class and cannot wait to see your child thrive here at The Drive Primary School. Our ethos is that every child belongs, and we are committed to creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where all children feel safe, valued and supported. We work hard to ensure that each child is encouraged to develop their confidence, independence and love of learning, enabling them to reach their full potential. We look forward to working closely with you throughout your child's Reception journey,

Yearly Overview

In Reception, our curriculum is guided by the children's interests to ensure that learning is engaging, relevant and enjoyable. This approach helps to foster a love of learning. Alongside this, we also incorporate carefully planned topics to ensure a board and balanced curriculum.

In Reception, all learning is guided by the statutory Early Years Framework, which sets out the Early Learning Goals that children are expected to achieve by the end of their Reception Year.

The framework can be found here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/68c024cb8c6d992f23edd79c/Early_years_foundation_stage_statutory_framework_-_for_group_and_school-based_providers.pdf.pdf

Weekly Timetable

Learning through play is a fundamental part of Reception. Children will take part in daily sessions known as 'Plan Do Review', which provides opportunities for them to learn independently through exploring, investigating, observing and communicating.

Children will also take part in daily phonics sessions, daily maths activities in Number Sense, and have regular opportunities to develop a love of writing through our ‘Drawing Club’ lessons.

Supporting your child's learning at home
In Reception, children will start our Phonics programme Sounds Write. To support your children learning at home, there is a free Sounds Write phonics app available on the Apple App Store.

To support maths development at home, there is also a free 1-Minute Maths White Rose app which supports children with their number recognition.

Your child will also be provided with a reading book that aligns with our phonics scheme. Please read as much as you can with your child at home to help your child make accelerated progress towards becoming independent readers.
