Art at The Drive Primary School

At The Drive, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils are given their entitlement to high quality art activities and experiences, regardless of background and ability. We believe that providing a full arts education will broaden our pupils’ experiences and allow them to express themselves through the arts. Our arts provision takes into account out of hours opportunities, the curriculum, celebrating achievements in the arts, links with artists and arts organisations and the contribution of the arts to the school environment. Resources are allocated to arts provision, including staff and their professional development, facilities and materials. Our arts provision is embedded in the school’s ethos and planning. Pupils learn skills through drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, collage and textiles activities.

In Key stage 1, children learn:

  • about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making  links to their own work

In Key stage 2, children learn:

  • to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials
