Religious Education
At The Drive Primary School, Religious Education (RE) plays a vital role in developing pupils as respectful, thoughtful and informed members of society. Our RE curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity about the world’s diverse beliefs and values, while encouraging children to reflect on their own ideas and experiences.
Our Intent
We aim to foster respect, understanding and empathy through the study of a wide range of religions and worldviews. Pupils are supported to explore moral questions, develop their own identity and values, and appreciate the perspectives of others in a multicultural world.
Through RE, children build cultural capital by learning about global traditions, festivals and practices, broadening their understanding of society and preparing them for life in a diverse community.
Our Approach
Our curriculum follows the Gateshead Agreed Syllabus, ensuring a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years to Key Stage 2. Learning is structured around three key strands:
- Explore
- Engage
- Reflect
Pupils study a range of religions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, with opportunities to explore Sikhism, Buddhism and non-religious worldviews as they progress.
We use a carefully adapted Kapow Religion and Worldviews scheme, enriched with real-life experiences such as visits, artefacts and encounters with members of local faith communities.
Teaching and Learning
Lessons are designed to encourage discussion, enquiry and critical thinking, helping pupils to express their views confidently while showing respect for others.
Consistency across school is supported through:
- A clear long-term curriculum plan
- Shared resources and approaches
- Ongoing collaboration and monitoring by subject leaders
The Impact of RE
Our RE curriculum supports pupils in developing:
- Respect and tolerance for different beliefs
- Critical thinking and communication skills
- Spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness (SMSC)
- A strong sense of identity and belonging
We see impact through:
- Increasingly thoughtful pupil discussions
- Strong vocabulary and understanding of key concepts
- Connections made across subjects and to real life
- Confident pupil voice about beliefs and values
By the time children leave The Drive, they are equipped with the knowledge, understanding and respect needed to engage thoughtfully with the diverse world around them.
All year groups follow the 2014 National Curriculum for all subject areas. Please find copy of the curriculum overview below. If you should require any further information with regards to our curriculum coverage, please speak to a member of staff.
