Intent

At The Drive Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, respected and included. Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is at the heart of our commitment to developing the whole child and preparing pupils for life in modern Britain. We aim to create a strong sense of belonging, where children understand that they are an important part of our school, local community and wider society.

Our curriculum is underpinned by our core value of Respect. We teach children to respect themselves, respect others, respect differences and respect the world around them. Through this approach, pupils develop empathy, kindness, tolerance and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships. We celebrate diversity and ensure that all children learn to appreciate and value different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and experiences.

The Drive Primary School serves a diverse community, and we recognise that pupils need the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate an ever-changing world. Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is designed to help children become resilient, responsible and active citizens who can contribute positively to their local community. We want our pupils to leave primary school with the confidence to make informed choices, the ability to keep themselves safe, and the understanding that they can make a positive difference to the lives of others.

We aim for all children to:

Through our curriculum, children learn not only how to succeed academically, but also how to thrive socially, emotionally and morally.

Implementation

PSHE and RSE are taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that enables pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to flourish both now and in the future. Learning is sequenced to build upon prior knowledge and reflects the needs of our pupils, our school community and the wider world.

At The Drive Primary School, we recognise that personal development extends beyond the classroom. Therefore, PSHE and RSE are delivered through:

• Dedicated PSHE lessons.
• Assemblies and themed awareness events
• Circle time and restorative conversations
• Cross-curricular learning opportunities
• Pupil leadership opportunities and school responsibilities
• Educational visits and visitors from the local community
• Whole-school enrichment activities linked to wellbeing, citizenship and personal development

Together, PSHE and RSE help pupils develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships and the world around them. Through engaging and age-appropriate learning experiences, children are supported to:

• Build healthy, respectful and positive relationships
• Understand consent, boundaries and personal safety in an age-appropriate way
• Manage emotions and develop emotional literacy
• Understand the importance of good mental and physical health
• Recognise and respond to risks both online and offline
• Develop financial awareness and economic understanding
• Understand democracy, equality, rights and responsibilities
• Appreciate their role in supporting and strengthening their local community

We place a strong emphasis on helping children understand how they can contribute positively to our local area. Pupils are encouraged to show respect, responsibility and kindness through community projects, charitable events, environmental initiatives and opportunities to support others. This helps children understand that they are valued members of society and that their actions can have a positive impact on the lives of those around them.

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) are delivered in line with current statutory guidance and are supported by the Kapow Primary Scheme of Work, ensuring clear progression and consistency across all year groups.

Our PSHE Curriculum (2026–2027)

Our curriculum focusses on the following key areas of learning:

My Healthy Self

Developing knowledge and understanding of physical health, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, emotional regulation and personal safety.

Connecting with Others

Building positive relationships, communication skills, empathy, respect, inclusion and understanding different family structures and friendships.

The Online World

Developing digital citizenship, online safety, media literacy and strategies to stay safe and responsible when using technology.

Citizenship

Understanding rights, responsibilities, democracy, equality, diversity, local communities and life in modern Britain.

Growing Up

Supporting children to understand and prepare for physical, emotional and social changes as they grow and develop.

Through these themes, pupils revisit and deepen their understanding each year, ensuring that learning is meaningful, relevant and responsive to their stage of development.

Impact

By the time pupils leave The Drive Primary School, they will be starting to  develop the confidence, resilience and respect needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond. They will start to understand how to keep themselves safe, maintain healthy relationships, contribute positively to their community and demonstrate our school value of Respect in all aspects of their lives.
