Key Information
Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school each day so they can stay hydrated.
As the weather can be changeable, children should also bring a suitable coat every day. We kindly ask that children wear appropriate footwear for school, such as comfortable, safe shoes suitable for both indoor learning and outdoor play.
We have two PE sessions during our week, one on a Tuesday and one on a Thursday. Your child is free to come to school in PE kits on this day.
Promoting a love of reading, phonics and book bags
As you know, Year 1 places a strong focus on developing children’s reading and phonics skills. We follow the Sounds-Write scheme for our phonics lessons, which supports children in becoming confident and fluent readers.
Each Monday, your child will bring home a book bag containing two books: one that links directly to our phonics teaching, and another chosen to help foster a love of reading and enjoyment of books.
Children read daily as part of their phonics sessions and will usually read 1:1 with an adult in school. Please note that this may occasionally change due to other school activities. Where needed, additional tailored support and intervention will be provided to ensure every child makes the best possible progress.
In Summer 2, children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, statutory assessment that helps us see how well children are progressing with their phonics and reading skills. During the check, children will be asked to read a mixture of real words and ‘alien’ (nonsense) words to assess their ability to apply their phonics knowledge. We will ensure that all children feel prepared and confident for this, and we will keep you informed as the time approaches.
If your child has a favourite book they particularly enjoy at home, we would love to hear about it and will happily share it with the class.
Timetable
Our timetable is included below and gives you an insight into our daily routine in Year 1. We have a snack time each day, which takes place just after the morning break.
Please note that the timetable may occasionally need to be adjusted depending on school events or other activities.
