Nursery and Reception

At The Drive, we know that a child’s first experiences of school are incredibly important. Our Nursery (ages 2–4) and Reception classes provide a warm, welcoming and stimulating environment where children feel safe, happy and valued. We encourage every child to develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning through play, exploration and positive relationships.

Our Early Years provision follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and is underpinned by our school values of RESPECT – Respect, Empathy, Self-Awareness, Passion and Positivity, Excellence, Communication and Teamwork. These values help children to grow into confident, independent and caring learners who are ready for the next stage of their education.

The EYFS supports children’s learning and development through high-quality teaching, meaningful play experiences and nurturing relationships. It provides the strong foundations children need to thrive both in school and beyond.

The EYFS Principles

Our approach is based on the four key principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage:

Every child is unique

We recognise that each child develops at their own pace and brings their own strengths, interests and experiences. We celebrate individuality and encourage children to become confident and capable learners.

Positive relationships matter

Children learn best when they feel secure and supported. Our caring staff build strong, trusting relationships with children and families, helping every child feel happy and confident.

Enabling environments inspire learning

We provide engaging indoor and outdoor spaces that encourage children to explore, investigate, create and learn through play.

Children develop in different ways

We understand that every child’s learning journey is unique. By responding to individual needs and interests, we ensure all children can succeed and flourish.

The EYFS framework supports all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). At The Drive, we are committed to ensuring every child is fully included, supported and encouraged to achieve their best.

Areas of Learning and Development

Prime Areas

These key areas support children’s development and provide the foundations for all future learning.

Prime Area	How Children Learn
Communication and Language	Children develop their speaking, listening and understanding skills through conversations, storytelling, songs, rhymes and a language-rich environment that encourages confident communication.
Physical Development	Through active play, outdoor learning and practical activities, children develop their coordination, strength and fine motor skills. They also learn about healthy lifestyles and self-care.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development	Children learn to build friendships, develop confidence, manage their emotions and work positively with others, helping them become happy and resilient learners.

Specific Areas

These areas build on the skills developed within the Prime Areas and help children develop a broad range of knowledge and understanding.

Literacy	Children develop early reading and writing skills through stories, rhymes, mark-making opportunities and exposure to high-quality texts.
Mathematics	Children explore number, shape, space, measure and patterns through practical activities, games and real-life problem-solving experiences.
Understanding the World	Children learn about people, places, technology, nature and different communities, helping them make sense of the world around them.
Expressive Arts and Design	Children are encouraged to express their ideas and creativity through art, music, dance, role play, construction and imaginative play.

Birth to 5 Matters

Our curriculum is supported by Birth to 5 Matters, a guidance document that helps practitioners understand how children learn and develop during their early years.

This guidance recognises that every child develops differently and celebrates the unique path each child takes as they grow, learn and flourish. It helps us plan engaging, meaningful experiences that support progress across all areas of learning and development.

By using Birth to 5 Matters alongside the EYFS framework, we ensure that every child receives a broad, balanced and ambitious Early Years education, giving them the strongest possible start to their school journey.
