At our school, we are proud to run the Young Interpreters Scheme, which helps new pupils and families who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) feel welcomed, valued and included in our school community. The scheme trains selected pupils to act as peer mentors, supporting new children as they settle into school routines, make friends and build confidence.

Young Interpreters may be bilingual or English-speaking pupils who have developed skills in communication, empathy and leadership. They help classmates understand daily activities, navigate school life and feel part of the school community from the very beginning.

The programme promotes our commitment to equality, inclusion and pupil leadership. It encourages children to celebrate different languages, cultures and experiences while developing respect, kindness and understanding for others. Young Interpreters also gain valuable confidence, communication and leadership skills through their role.

Young Interpreters take part in dedicated training sessions where they learn communication, leadership and peer-support skills. Through practical activities and role-play, they learn how to welcome new pupils, explain school routines, support inclusion and celebrate the diverse languages and cultures within our school community. They also receive guidance on safeguarding and understanding the important boundaries of their role, ensuring that all support is provided safely and appropriately.

By empowering pupils to support one another, the Young Interpreters Scheme helps create a welcoming environment where every child feels safe, included and able to thrive. This reflects our school's commitment to providing an inclusive education and preparing children to become caring and responsible citizens.
