As a result of our recent Phonics screening test the Senior Management made the decision to explore other phonics related schemes to ensure that standards are raised to above the National Average in Summer 15. The scheme we chose was 'Sounds Write' which trains children to record words as they learn to spell them. One of our staff members attended a four day training course and disseminated the training and materials to the rest of the staff. The scheme will be closely monitored to ensure that it enhances phonics teaching and learning in our school.
We intend to supplement the scheme with phonics based reading books and these will be ordered in the Autumn Term. At present the school uses the following reading schemes in Key Stage 1:
Big cats phonics
The books are graded to ensure that all children can access reading at an appropriate level of their development.
These books will be supplemented with the Key Stage 2 reading schemes if children develop their reading beyond that which is expected of them.
